Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
