Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
