EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
